        CalStick® Boluses for Dairy Animals

Oral boluses with calcium, energy fat, magnesium, phosphate and urea supplements for dairy cows

DESCRIPTION: Oral calcium or other nutrients provide immediate and sustained releases for dairy cows. Milk fever or parturient paresis is a metabolic disorder caused by a state of acute hypocalcemia (deficiency of calcium) in the blood. It may occur in dairy cows during the calving period. The lactation increases calcium, energy fat and other needs.

RATIONAL TREATMENT: Oral administration of readily absorbed calcium salts is one major treatment to milk fever. Calcium chloride solution, paste or gel products may be used. However they have negative aspects such as large volumes and rejection by the cows to partial waste. They also have the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

BOLUS FEATURES: (1) Deliver more calcium;  (2) Prevent waste over gel or paste products; (3)  Stable without melting and gelling problems over other bolus and paste products at warm or freezing temperatures and (4) Rounded end for ease of administration.

CalStick Calcium Fast: The mixture of calcium propionate and calcium chloride provides immediate and fast calcium release for treating or preventing milk fever of dairy cows. Each small solid bolus (1" diameter and 5" length) contains 21g of calcium. Each large solid bolus  (1 1/4" diameter and 5" length) contains 42g of calcium.

Product #    Coating*    Diameter   Calcium (g)

CS – CF9N        No             1"             21

CS – CF9C       Yes             1"             21

CS – CF18C     Yes          1 1/4"          42

* Coating:  Vegetable lipid is used for coating boluses to make the bolus surface "wet" and very smooth.  Our non-coated bolus surface is dry and smooth.. There is a coating option for the small boluses with 1” diameter, which is relatively small. Non-coated boluses have a very fast release property within 15 minutes. Coating reduces release rate more than double. The boluses with 1 1/4” diameter have double ingredient(s) and are large boluses, on which the vegetable coating is applied and helps smooth administration and prevents the effect from calcium chloride. The coated boluses are vacuum packed individually.

CalStick Calcium Plus:  The mixture of calcium propionate, calcium chloride and calcium carbonate/ calcium phosphate provides fast and slow calcium releases for treating or preventing milk fever of dairy cows.

DOSAGE and ADMINISTRATION: Boluses are individually sealed to ensure stability. Remove cover and place the rounded end toward the cow and administer the boluses by a balling gun. After administration, clean the balling gun with water and air dry for next application.

Supportive treatment: Oral administration to a dairy cow one large bolus (or two small boluses) prior to or immediately after calving and another large bolus (or two small boluses) at 6-12 hours after calving.

Prevention: one large bolus (or two small boluses) at 2-6 hours prior to calving and another large bolus (or two small boluses) at 6-12 hours after calving.

RECOMMENDATIONS: The calcium boluses can be stored at normal temperature. Open the sealed cover just prior to use. Moisture affects the boluses. Do not administer to cows lying down. Do not use for treating initial on set of hypocalcemia. For use in animals only. Keep out of reach of children.

Customer Boluses: Formulations may be adjusted according to customers’ needs with special ingredients.
